Ways to Prepare for Residential Substance Abuse Treatment

The decision that you or someone you know makes to start residential treatment for a substance addiction is a big move toward recovery. That decision is connected to making preparations—including preparing mentally and emotionally, making family and social arrangements, and taking care of other important life aspects.

This article includes ideas on ways to prepare for residential substance abuse treatment.

We at Jackson House Recovery Centers want each client to have a smooth transition into a treatment program and a successful experience during residency and beyond.

Preparing for Residential Substance Abuse Treatment

We offer preparation support for residential substance abuse treatment to make things as easy as possible. For example, we offer free, confidential consultations to assess the needs of individuals. These consultations help ensure that an effective and personalized treatment plan is in place for each client. Meeting with potential program participants sets the stage for providing individuals with the help they need, based on their specific circumstances.

The admissions process for Jackson House is a four-step process to provide information to both the individual considering program admission and our internal team so that a treatment plan can be put into place.

Admissions starts with the first phone call from an individual, loved one, or healthcare provider. Following that outreach is an initial assessment. Once that has been completed, a start date for treatment can be decided upon.

Mental and Emotional Preparation

Anxieties and feelings of uncertainty may accompany the decision to begin residential substance abuse treatment. It’s completely normal to feel anxious or uncertain, and we want to help each client feel as comfortable as possible. Following are some suggested ways to help ease anxiety and build certainty as you mentally and emotionally prepare for treatment.

Research

A first step is to research the program and the facility. The more that you understand about what is going to happen, the easier it may be to begin treatment. Research can also help alleviate some of the uncertainties surrounding the start and structure of the program.

Identify “why"

It may be beneficial to you to understand and solidify why you are seeking treatment. What is the motivation? Having the answer in your mind may help you get through the harder times and remind you of why substance addiction treatment is important.

Consider your goals

It’s also important to identify your goals and what you want out of the residential substance abuse treatment program. Setting realistic goals will give you something to aim for, helping you remain motivated to get to where you want to be.

Goals that you have following treatment can also be motivators. Consider what you will be able to do after residential treatment, keeping a longer-term perspective on opportunities and what you want to accomplish.

Frame treatment as progression

Too many people may see treatment as a negative, but being open to treatment is a positive way forward.

Family and Social Preparation

Preparations that involve others in your life are important to your overall preparedness. Consider those in your life who will be directly involved in your treatment and/or schedule during treatment. Following are points you may want to incorporate into your preparation.

Communicate with family members

Speaking with family members about your decision to seek out treatment through open and honest discussion can be helpful in building trust and establishing your intentions. Talking with family members about your planned treatment may also help in creating and strengthening a support system.

Make childcare and other plans

If you have responsibilities for children or other family responsibilities that you need to take care of, it’s important to make plans for such while you are in treatment. Ask someone of multiple individuals you trust for support while you are in your treatment program. Having childcare and other arrangements sorted out can help give you peace of mind and a greater ability to concentrate on your treatment program.

Determine family involvement

If you are interested in having your family involved in your treatment process, it is a good idea to understand the options and to make a plan as part of your program preparations. At Jackson House, family involvement is welcomed, with family sessions and visitation available.

Talk with friends

You may also decide to speak to your friends about your decision to seek treatment so that they know what is happening. Speak to them about how you’re feeling and why you’ve decided to seek treatment. This communication will show that you are being open and honest.

Establish a support system

A support system is an important and powerful aspect of recovery, so it’s a good idea to identify the people who can form a solid support system for you. Having support around you can be helpful before, during, and following treatment.

Insurance, Work, and Other Preparations

Following are more ideas to consider:

Make sure insurance is in order

It’s important to make sure your insurance is in order before you attend residential substance abuse treatment. This can help alleviate worries about the financial aspects of treatment.

Arrange for work absence

You will be away from work during your treatment stay, so make arrangements with your employer. Discuss your absence from work and fulfillment of employment responsibilities while you are away.

Have other plans in place

Identify care for finances, legal matters, and aspects of home upkeep while you are receiving treatment. Having this all planned out can help others know your expectations, provide them with ways to be of support, and give you peace in knowing that arrangements have been made for these elements of your life while you are at a treatment center.

Packing Preparations

Packing items to bring with you into residential treatment is a key element of preparation. Among our recommendations are:

  • Two weeks of clothing, approximately
  • Slippers
  • Toiletries, including toothbrush, soap, shampoo, etc.
  • A credit card
  • Identification
  • Your health insurance card

Clients may bring more with them into the center if they wish, but there are items that are not allowed. Our team can discuss what to pack and what is provided by the facility.
