Substance abuse recovery is a journey that requires strength, support, and often more than one attempt. Recovery from substance addiction can be made harder by social stigma, isolation, or emotional distress. As such, the discrimination, marginalization, and unique life stressors faced by people in the LGBTQ+ community can make recovery extra challenging.
The LGBTQ+ community is disproportionately impacted by addiction, showing higher rates of drug and alcohol use compared to others. This disparity isn’t random; it is often associated with the aforementioned set of unique challenges.
A lot of the difficulties reported by members of the LGBTQ+ community match the underlying factors known to contribute to substance abuse across the board. The path to addiction can be a lot shorter due to pre-existing conditions of social and emotional adversity, like the following:
Chronic stress is a leading contributing factor in addiction. For many LGBTQ+ people, these stressors are often intensified by pressure from family and society. A lot of people experience stress due to fears of being outed, pressure to conceal their feelings, or ongoing tension with family members. This long-term exposure to stress can lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including substance abuse.
Feeling unaccepted may put someone at risk of experiencing a deep sense of unease. Anxiety from being discriminated against at work, bullied in school, or being misunderstood by peers causes a heightened sense of vulnerability in LGBTQ+ individuals. Anxiety disorders are common in the community for this reason and may often go untreated. Drug use as a means of self-medication, knowingly or unconsciously, can spiral into addiction.
Sadness, hopelessness, and despair are familiar to many in the community. Cumulative experiences of social tension and rejection, alongside a lack of affirming mental care, can lead to depression. A lack of healthy support systems and coping mechanisms may cause those in the LGBTQ+ community to turn to substance abuse to numb their pain.
Rejection from family, peers, institutions, and society at large can leave a lasting mark. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community are rejected by those closest to them, sometimes including their parents. The emotional toll of these experiences can drive people toward substances as a means to fill the void left by lost relationships and a lack of acceptance.
Being unfairly ot unjustly treated can be traumatic and isolating, especially for those who do not have a strong support structure. Discrimination can happen anywhere, which can affect feelings of vulnerability and one’s self-esteem and sense of safety. While drugs and alcohol may seem like an escape, they introduce health consequences and the danger of long-term dependence.

There are three main pathways to admission:
Our admissions process is a simple four-step process. The process begins with a referral phone call. From there, initial work is conducted to determine the situation and how best to proceed. Next, a clinical assessment is performed to determine the right level of care and if our center is a good facility for proper treatment. If Jackson House Recovery Centers and the referred individual agree to begin treatment, step three is arranging for the program to start. Finally, we welcome patients and admit them to begin their recovery journey with us.
